Jaka Škapin is a Slovenian performer, composer and vocal improviser.
His music is marked by his choral background, jazz training and Slavic heritage, exploring the intersection of ancestry, embodiment, nature connection and musicianship.
As a collaborative vocal improvisation and circlesinging facilitator he has recently taught in Slovenia, the US, UK and France, and is one of the co-producers of the UK Vocal Improv Festival Retreat. As a performer, he has taken part in Rhiannon’s Murmuration Project, The Netherland’s IFNL Festival and TIN Festival, and toured Germany with the Anthropos Quartet. Jaka is the current producer of The Well Global Vocal Improvisation Network.
Jaka taught 2 days on the last Level 3-4 Wild Voice, Solid Roots course and everyone absolutely loved it. His teaching is calm and precise, creative and technical. It brings us all into new musical and vocal possibilities. Welcome back Jaka!
Chops for Singers
This is a Level 3-4 series. Chops for Singers courses blend music theory study with vocal improvisation practice. Jaka will teach intermediate - advanced aspects of rhythm, melody and harmony, and help us to sophisticate our improvisation with them. There’ll be a participant cabaret on the Thursday night, and Briony and Jaka will do an improvised public concert at MIC (our venue) on the Wednesday night.
Briony will participate and be back up teacher as needed.
Jaka’s teaching will explore:
Oddmeter
Polymeter
Melodic and harmonic development
Accessing harmonic modulation in intuitive embodied way
Being in a mode, transitioning to another mode - as an individual (solo) - also collective transition
Possibly ways of enhancing the harmony of a piece. If you begin by doing 1 chord loops, what does it mean to do 2 chord loops, to create B sections, variety, contrast
Teaching will be flexible to where people are at and how they want to use it, also inspired by the first 2 courses in this series (with Ines in September and Cleveland in November).
