Vocal Improvisation for Men

  • Bristol 24 Gibson Road Bristol, England, BS6 5SJ United Kingdom (map)

Vocal Improvisation is the art of spontanous in-the-moment vocal composition, alone and with others. It can involve lyrics, rhythm, harmony, melody, baselines and beatboxing. I teach a version of the artform pioneered by Bobby McFerrin, Joey Blake and Rhiannon in the US, and my teaching tends to emphasise chops (musical rigour), your body's full voice, lyrics and collaboration.

Here are:

a film of Bobby and Joey improvising

an old film about my work (a new one is being made)

a live improvisation I did last month

the five-voice improvised album we made.

Hi men. You're under-represented right now in UK Vocal Improv. Usually 1-3 of you come to any workshops I do. We miss you. I miss you. Your voices are wanted!

So for the first time, I'm offering a men-only workshop, to share vocal improvisation with men specifically.

Vocal improv is challenging and it's best if you can already sing in tune and keep a beat.

And it's thrilling. I've been a singer my whole life and this is by far the best way of singing I've ever found. Which is why I'm devoted to it. And I'd love to welcome you to try it and / or go further with it.

All the very best,

Saturday 10am - 5pm, Sunday 10.30am - 4pm. Bring a packed lunch or cafes nearby. Kitchen facilities available.

The venue offers bnb at £35 if you're coming from afar. Email if you'd like to book.
