Vocal Improvisation: An Intermediate/Advanced Introduction

  • Dartington Village Hall Cott Road Totnes, England, TQ9 United Kingdom (map)

This is a weekend for experienced singers: performers, teachers, choir leaders, composers, and experienced students / keen singers. If you're not sure, please get in touch to check:

For those with a passion for singing and a thirst for musical space broader than song, band or choir, Vocal Improvisation offers singers an open space for skilled expression, an unusually deep opportunity to collaborate with other singers (and instrumentalists, but not in this workshop), and a rich musical challenge.

It works our selves. The artform reaches to our souls and sends them through the air via our unique voices. People usually find this initially terrifying, and then very powerful. Over time, it welcomes us to settle into our full selves, and expand our comfort to be seen and heard.

Vocal Improvisation invites us rise as communitarians, as we co-create a container of safety and care, which the artform asks of us.

It works our chops - our applied music theory; as the musical map provided by composition is taken away, we have to up-skill our use of rhythm, harmony and melody - and wow, that feeds us: respecting ourselves as vocal musicians and training ourselves accordingly, step by step.

Most of all, Vocal Improv is really really fun, connective, a deep journey and more and more of us are becoming - or have become - hooked.

Briony Greenhill - recently called “The Joni Mitchell of a new generation,” "the Rolls-Royce of voice teachers," "a master" whose work is "life changing" - offers the only extended trainings in Vocal Improvisation available in the UK and a unique blend of expertise in vocal musicianship, voice coaching and improvisation, also increasingly informed by trauma literacy and Californian healing modalities.

Briony teaches this from general to advanced levels in the UK and U.S., has released the world's first entirely improvised five voice album and is currently producing another two albums. You can see a film of a recent live improvisation here, watch an old film about this teaching here (a new film is in production), and listen to the last album here.

Limited to 16 places.

Saturday 10am-5pm (please bring something to share for lunch)

Sunday 12pm - 4.30pm. (no lunchbreak! Please eat a late brunch and bring a snack)

Students have said:

“One of the most powerful experiences of my life! I feel changed on a cellular level!” (ok it was a 4 day retreat not a weekend…)

“Briony really made us all feel at home – starting off with exercises that didn’t force me outside of my comfort zone, and a no judgement pact, really allowed me to feel comfortable with the group, which then gave me the confidence to try out some solos.”

“It was seriously fun, crazy, inspiring, opening and meditative, all at the same time.”

“Some singing teachers teach you sing with your voice. Briony teaches you to sing with your heart and sing from your soul.”

“You made it feel like a womb. Protected, loved, nourished, warm and holding.”
